WeaponCollector's Homemade Pump Action Crossbow

WeaponCollector's Homemade Pump Action Crossbow - A 90% Homemade Pump Action Crossbow, the only things that were not  made were the prod and string, which is a bought pistol prod and string.

Made in July of 2011, it took about 15hrs work spread over a period of about 2 weeks, virtually entirely hand made, with a drill being the only power tool used.

Made using 12mm Plywood, some 2mm Aluminium, some 10mm , and 5mm aluminium, plus various screw, bolts, glue and a few springs.

The way this crossbow was made is also one of the most simple ways they can be done, its doesn't need a lot of tools or skill using the method I use.

This is a fully working model, although the pump doesn't really work due to the quality of the groove for the pump handle, its single shot only, shoots standard 6" pistols bolts.

Draw weight is approx 80lbs, which is about as powerful as you can get for a pistol, makes for a fun crossbow.

It has a reasonably hard trigger pull, which is compensated for by have a large trigger made for two fingers.
Trigger pull is usually quite hard for this kind of trigger mechanism, due to the way its made however you soon get used to it after shooting a few times.

After finishing the Crossbow I tested it and after quite a lot of few adjustments it eventually fired o.k,
to be honest though it is normal to have to make quite a few adjustments when making homemade crossbows of this kind.

I have also filmed the entire "Making of a Pump Action  Crossbow" series for this crossbow which can be viewed either on my blog, or on my Youtube channel - WeaponCollector - There is a total of 10+ "making of" videos in the series.

Video of this Crossbow being shot and tested - COMING SOON
Overall a great project to make, simple and easy, and I think most people should be able to make something similar.

Dimensions : Full length - 15" , Width - 1.5" , Prod width - 17" , Height - 8" , Draw Length is 6".

I hope you liked my Pump Action Crossbow, Feel free to comment and let me know what you think.

Scroll down for a detailed video of what materials to buy.

Be aware that this design is a prototype and may now work when fully finished, it is recommended that you watch all parts of the video series first before buying any materials.

Materials list : 50lb or 80lb draw weight pistol crossbow prod - search Google for places that sell them.

Or you can make a pistol prod by cutting handsaw blades into 45cm x 37mm sections using a angle grinder, cut in grooves at the end for the string and tape together in bundles of at least 5 (CLICK HERE FOR A TUTORIAL)

You will also need:
One plywood board, 42cm x 25cm x 12mm or any wood this size.

One plywood board, 42cm x 25cm x 3mm or any wood or material this size.

One plywood board, 10cm x 5cm x 12mm

Two aluminium plates, 37cm x 10cm x 2mm , or any hard materials, including hard wood, plastics, other metals (you can use steel, but it will make this a very long hard job)

One aluminium plate 17cm x 11cm x 2mm (must be some kind of bendable metal)

Two aluminium plates 12cm x 4.5cm x 5mm thick. (sides of pump handle)

One aluminium plate 11cm x 5.5mm x 12mm , can be aluminium or tin or steel (for Nut and Trigger)

One aluminium plate 6cm x 6cm x 12mm, can be aluminium or tin or steel

One aluminium or steel Tube - 12cm x 22m thick (round)

One piece of wood - 12cm x 22m thick, (to fit inside handle)

One 10cm x 6mm bolt with 22mm or 25mm washer and nut

Sixty x 25mm screws that can be counter sunk

Six 4mm thick 22mm self tapping screws

Two 10cm x 5mm nails

10 washers 12mm with 5mm hole

Two 10cm x 5mm bolts with nuts

Three 5cm metal tubes with 5mm or 6mm hole (overall size thickness is about 8-10mm)

Two 10mm or 15mm tension springs (4mm thick)

Homemade Carbine Crossbow

Homemade Carbine Crossbow -  A 100% homemade crossbow, the only thing that wasn't made was the string, which is a bought pistol string.
Made in May and June of 2011, it took about 20hrs work spread over a period of about 2-3 week, virtually entirely hand made, with a drill being the only power tool used.

Made using 12mm Plywood, some 2mm Aluminium, some 1" aluminium and 5mm Aluminium, plus various screw, bolts, glue and a few springs.
The way this crossbow was made is also one of the most simple ways they can be done, its doesn't need a lot of tools or skill using the method I use.
This is a fully working model, single shot only, shoots standard 6" pistols bolts or homemade 10" rifle bolts.
Draw weight is approx 40 - 50lbs, which isn't that powerful but still makes for a fun crossbow.

It has a reasonably hard  trigger pull, but that's normal for this kind of trigger mechanism, and you soon get used to it after shooting a few times.

After finishing the Crossbow I tested it and it fired perfectly after a few adjustments, with the1" nut design you can add a groove for the bolt so that the bolt is actually touching the string, this means you are a lot less likely to get any misfires.

The prod is also 100% homemade and can be removed at any time and swapped for virtually any size prod by using various inserts, you can find a blog entry showing how to make a Crossbow Prod HERE

I have also filmed the entire "Making of a Carbine Crossbow"series for this crossbow which can be viewed either on my blog, or on my Youtube channel - WeaponCollector - There is a total of 6 "making of" videos in the series, the last video features a myself showing the crossbow being fired into various targets.

For a video of this Crossbow being shot and tested click HERE

Overall a great project to make, simple and easy, and I think most people should be able to make something similar.

Dimensions : Full length - 26" , Width - 2" , Prod width - 17" , Height - 6.5" , Draw Length is 7".
I hope you liked my Carbine Crossbow, Feel free to comment and let me know what you think.

How to make a Crossbow Prod (Limbs) from old saw blades

Below are a series of pictures showing the process of how to make a Crossbow Prod (Limbs) from old saw blades.

Basic Template  - prod can be 18" or up to 22"
depending on the saw blade you use

Any old saws will do the job for a prod (crossbow limbs)

How to mark out for the prod

Notches of the prod end parts.

Notches of the prod end parts.

Clamp the wood between two pieces of wood to use as a guide
to aid cutting with the angle grinder

This is the waste material.

How to make the string end caps from Aluminium,
cut along dot line, file to shape, drill holes

End caps in place (need a bit more filing still yet)

End caps in place (need a bit more filing still yet)
How to make Cross bow prod - this technique will produce a prod of around 50-65lbs draw weight when using 5 sections of 18" blade steel, longer sections and more parts will produce stronger prods, the draw length for this prod is about 7" inches.
Materials : 5 old saw blades, some 1/4" aluminium, 4 x bolts, locking nuts and washers, black electrical tape.
Tools for the Prod : Angle Grinder, Vice, safety gear, two pieces of wood (any length as long as its bigger than the saw blades), Marker pen.
End Caps : Drill, Files, hacksaw.

First thing to do is mark out the prod as shown above, clamp the saw between the wood as shown, I use screws and then I lay the whole thing on the floor and cut it that way, the saw blades will take a fair bit to cut, so it may take a few minutes to cut one blade (5-10mins possible)
Once roughly cut out put a section of blade in the vice and grind or file the edges smooth so they are not rough anymore, then using the grinder cut in the prod end grooves, do these things on all 5 sections.
You will then have the basic prod, but will still need the end caps for the string.

Cut two piece of 1/4 aluminum to the sizes shown above, cut out the basic shape and then using files shape it to the finished shape, drill the holes (about 4 - 5mm) the position may vary depending on where you cut the end groove on the saw blades.
Once the end caps are shaped you just need to prepare the parts.

What I do is get the 5 sections and tape them together with the tape, don't cover the whole prod , just do it in bands as wide as the tap itself, and leave the ends free so you can bolt on the end caps,

Once I have the tape on I then bolt on the end caps on the outside edge of the prod (bolt on either side, just make sure when you use it the end caps are on the outside)
Once bolted on, cut of any of the bolts that's stick out past the nuts and wrap the end in tape as shown above.

About the string : This size prod will be able to use a bought pistol prod string, but you can make one from most strong, non stretching string.

You should now have a full working Prod ready for your crossbow. I hope this tutorial helped.
