How to make Solid Brass Knuckles

Making a Solid Brass Knuckle Duster - Although this is NOT a tutorial, rather a series of pictures I acquired of the "Making Of" a knuckle duster, it does show the process that is used to make one.
I requested these pictures because I thought it would be interesting to show others the process.

First the materials are sourced, in this case a solid brass plate or sheet, the design is then drawn onto the metal using either a marker pen or scratched onto the metal using an awl.
The maker then drills holes in and around the drawn on knuckle duster shape, then using a hammer and flat head screwdriver or chisel the maker hammers between the drill holes to punch out the rough shape (not shown).
Then using various files the metal is filed and shaped until it resembles the rough shape of the knuckle duster, at this stage the edges are still very rough, a small round file is used to round over the edges and make it comfortable.
All that is required now is for the maker to sand the edges smooth using various sandpapers going from rough to smooth, it is then rubbed over with wire wool and then polished with Brasso.

As you can see from the many entries in this blog this technique produces very nice custom made Brass Knuckles / Knuckle Dusters, using this method it takes the maker about 4-6 hours to produce one Knuckle Duster, however each design may take a longer or shorter time depending the design, materials and thickness. some materials can range from 6mm - 25mm, the materials that can be used range from Metals - Aluminium, Brass, Steel, Copper, to materials like Wood and Plastics, I have seen ones made from Oak, Walnut, Beech, and plywood, as well as Acrylic plastic and Chopping Board Plastic, even Stone and Antler can be used.

Home Made Acrylic Tanto Trench Knife

Black Plastic Acrylic Tanto Trench Knife - An acrylic plastic trench knife or knuckle duster knife, although made of plastic it is still strong, and able to do plenty of damage to a would-be mugger or attacker.
It has a 5" blade which is capable of stabbing but not slashing / cutting, this trench knife is similar to the types of shanks found in prisons and would do the same kind of damage.
This one also features a skull crusher spike that is meant to be used in a hammer type blow.

The size is medium to large hands, and would probably fit small hands too.
Features round finger holes and a flat palm rest, jagged edge style striking surfaces, a skull crusher and 5" blade.
Weight is low due to size and it being made of Plastic.

Features no makers mark but was made by the person who makes most of my brass knuckles.
Overall an average plastic trench knife, looks o.k and is a one off in trench knife designs, not my favourite either, although still makes a good collectors piece, good for display and as a talking point.

Dimensions - 120mm wide (handle only), 80mm high (handle only), 8mm thick, Finger holes are 26mm wide and 32mm high.
Blade is 128mm - (5" inches) Overall length is 258mm - (just over 10" inches) Approx.

Home Made Acrylic Knuckle Duster

Clear Plastic Acrylic Knuckle Duster - A four finger jagged edge clear plastic acrylic knuckle duster, As mention these were made from clear acrylic and highly polished making them virtually see-through from all angles, although plastic they are still very strong and would still make great self defense weapons.

The knuckle duster does not have spikes but does have a jagged edge type striking surface.
The size for this Knuckle Duster is medium, but would fit large hands too,
Features oval finger holes and a curved palm rest and jagged edge striking surface.

Weight is low due its thickness and it being made of Plastic.
Features No makers mark.

Overall a great design and very attractive, light weight yet strong and another great display piece and talking point.
Dimensions - 110mm wide, 70mm high, 15mm thick, Finger holes are 22mm wide and 30mm high approx.

Ice Scrapper Knuckle Duster - A Three Finger Ice Scrapper Knuckle Duster based on the Executive ice scrappers that are commercially available.
Made from Plastic, features only one finger hole, but has support for three fingers making this a good safe comfortable self defense tool, but at the same time its a fully functional windscreen ice scrapper that could be kept in your car or other vehicle
The size is suited to Small - Medium but will also fit Large hands.

Features a oval finger hole and a flat palm rest, weight is low due the size and it being plastic.
These have no spikes,but does have a sharpened edge.
Features No makers marks.
Overall a good multi purpose knuckle duster, looks pretty cool, and would work great for self defense.

Dimensions - 90mm wide, 85mm high, 8mm thick, Finger holes 22mm wide and 30mm high approx.

Home made Knuckle Duster from Chopping Board

Chopping Board Plastic Knuckle Duster - A simple plastic four finger knuckle duster / Brass Knuckles made from a plastic chopping board.
The design is that of a simple commonly seen spiked knuckle duster.
Although made from plastic these are still capable of protecting the fingers when punching and will produce more damage than your knuckles alone, they are very light too.
The size is suited to Small to Medium hands/fingers, and will not fit large size hands / fingers.

Features round style finger holes and a curved palm rest and four pyramid style spikes,
Weight is very low due to them being made of plastic,
They do not feature any makers marks.
Overall a below average knuckle duster, looks o.k although they are a little small and I would chose Aluminium or even Perspex ones over these everytime, however they could help in a self defense emergency.

Dimensions - 105mm wide, 80mm high, 8mm thick, Finger holes are 22mm round approx.

Clear Plastic Acrylic Knuckle duster, Made from a Plastic acrylic sheet, has round holes and a flat palm rest and spikes, Some people wonder if plastic is strong enough for knuckle dusters, Well they certainly are!, these would hold up fine in a self defense situation, would also be perfect for getting through metal detectors.

Dimensions - 120mm wide, 66mm high, and 16mm thick with 25mm wide finger holes.
